Over $2 million in road maintance contracts awarded for Cleveland County

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission met Monday, March 6 to discuss the state budget and potential impacts of funding cuts to highway maintenance, but despite concerns awarded $87 million in contracts including two in Cleveland County.

Records from the meeting show a $1.27 million project was awarded to Haskell Lemon Construction for the resurfacing of US-77 from State Highway 9 into the City of Norman.

The same group was awarded a contract for a bridge rehabilitation on State Highway 39 over Willow Creek, near Lexington. The rehabilitation award is listed at $921,247.

The company headquarters is located in Oklahoma City and has a plant in Norman.

The commission also approved the addition of rumble strips to two highways in the county; US-77 between Noble and Lexington and State Highway-9 in east Norman, near Lake Thunderbird.

The commission announced the awards during their regular monthly meeting among discussions about the impact of state funding cuts.

“In the past decade, we’ve seen major improvements to our bridges, but that’s only part of the infrastructure issues that need to be addressed,” said David Burrage, transportation commission chairman during a discussion at the meeting with Gary Ridley, Oklahoma secretary of transportation and Mike Patterson, executive director Oklahoma department of transportation.

“With the same budget shortfalls facing our state year after year, we need to let the taxpayers know that further cuts to transportation funding will hurt the current and future condition of roads and bridges in Oklahoma.”

Since 2010, nearly $437 million in state funding has been cut from ODOT according to their accounting.
